Biography[]

Louis Gossett Jr. is a long-time American character actor whose film and TV career dates back to the late 1950s. Gossett's early roles on film often saw him cast as African characters in series such as Daktari and films like The Bushbaby, but he moved away from this and played a variety of roles in TV series such as The Mod Squad and westerns such as Bonanza. He also co-starred in the 1970-71 TV series The Young Rebels. Like many of the top African-American actors of his generation, he also appeared in the groundbreaking mini-series Roots.

After years of establishing his career, Gossett moved into superstardom in 1981 with his role as Gunnery Sergeant Foley in the hit film An Officer and a Gentleman, and while his subsequent science fiction TV series, The Powers of Matthew Star was unsuccessful, Gossett has continued to build an eclectic resume of performances ranging from more military roles in films such as Iron Eagle 2, to appearances in sitcoms such as Ellen and Half & Half, to voicing characters in the Half-Life 2 video game franchise.
